You guys. I’ve been holding out on you. I’ve had this amazing, beautiful, gorgeous, every-good-adjective-project (#projectmodernfamily ) and I have been hanging onto and I’m just now getting to reveal it. I’m sorry! It deserves an apology because it’s just that good.
I’ve been swamped getting our newest Stagg Design collection ready for launch (excuses, excuses, but it’s worth it!) which is so very special to me– I can’t wait for you to see it!– and many other things have taken a back seat. Well, I say no longer! This project deserves to be seen! So let’s DO THIS! I give you the #projectmodernfamily Great Room Reveal!
#projectmodernfamily is a repeat client. I designed their last home which they then up and sold and remodeled this lovely. Steve Tiek (who is the bomb) worked his magic with the construction and now I get the fun part– turning it into a home for this busy, fun family of five.
Before I dive too much into the pretty pictures, let me give you a little background. When I’m designing a space, any space, I do so with the inhabitants at heart. I don’t want the house to look like my house or like a catalog, I want it to look like their house. Like their home. Every piece of furniture, art, every accessory, is carefully selected to not only fit their needs, but also to fit their personalities. I believe in practical pieces. For this family, nothing fragile (two crazy little boys), nothing too white (again with the boys), and I believe firmly in balance between splurge and save.
I knew I needed comfortable, durable, and I wanted their home to serve as a haven. I’ll link as many products as I can at the bottom of the post for ya’ll. Let’s start the reveal with the family room and we’ll start working our way out from there, shall we? Here we go!
First off, this is a huge room. Huge like this room would eat a standard love seat for breakfast. In order for the room to feel balanced and to scale, the pieces needed to be large and in charge. This is also a main hangout for the family, so they needed to be comfortable too. Enter two sofas that compliment each other but aren’t identical.
Because this is a place the family hangs out a lot, the homeowners wanted an ottoman rather than a coffee table. We repurposed the large tufted ottoman from their last home (not everything has to be new, peeps!) and it worked great. I think it’s so important in design to use what you have if it’s high quality and translates into the space. So often people think they need (or their designer tells them) a space has to be all new in order to achieve the look and feel they want. The leather couch was also existing, a carry over from their last home. It was such a big investment, so comfortable and practical for the family, it was a keeper.
For the pillows, I wanted patterns that felt current, but also timeless. Our Stagg Design Brustroke Plaid pillows were the perfect launching point. I also added in our Moroccan Fringe Pillow, a couple of our ever popular Signature Zip Front Leather pillows in Weathered Grey, along with a few other really neutral prints.
The fireplace was pretty grand. I kind of felt like it didn’t want a big piece of art or a huge mirror above it. It wanted antlers. Coincidentally, the homeowner is a big hunter and had this massive rack hanging out at his office. I convinced them it needed to hang in their family room and you guys, isn’t it just the perfect piece for this room??? So simple yet such a statement. And it’s sentimental to the owner, which is the trifecta of awesome in my opinion.
Some Stagg Design pillows and a lantern make it a cozy place to curl up next to a fire, and also dress it up a bit.
This space just feels warm, inviting, and comfortable– just like this family. Mission accomplished! I’ve listed a lot of the items featured below, but if you have more questions, let me know! Some items were “to the trade” so I found similar items. And again, bravo to Steve Tiek on his beautiful work with the construction in this home. I can’t wait to share more!
